2020 - 2021 Season Shows and Events

The Panza Monologues is Coming Home!

AUDAZ_PANZA_PosterBIG.jpg

Teatro Audaz presents its final show of the 20/21 season, and OUR RETURN TO LIVE THEATRE,

THE PANZA MONOLOGUES!

Written, compiled, and collected by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga with additional stories by Barbara Renaud-Gonzalez, Petra A. Mata, and Maria R. Salazar.  Directed by Paula Rodriguez and featuring the ensemble cast of Brizzo Torres, Jojanie Moreno, Isabel DeLaCerda, and Laura T. Garza.

The Panza Monologues is based on women's stories about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide. The Panza Monologues features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor. Their stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women's thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and living conditions.

Since its inception in San Anto, Panza has played across the nation (East, West, North, South) but now it's coming home to where it all began, to its origin, to its source AND now it's a book! Now it's been the subject of doctoral dissertations! Now, it's been independently produced by professional and amateur and college theater companies alike across the country! It became a film, filmed in L.A.!

Now Teatro Audaz is putting it back into the bodies and lives of San Anto women and onto San Anto land to revisit and reconnect with the lives of women in San Anto who first inspired this project/play. We bring it back to San Anto to explore the issues of obesity, diabetes, food deserts...income inequality, all STILL prevalent in San Anto...ten years on, what remains the same? What do we still need to change? Why can't it be changed?

Teatro Audaz Proudly Presents
MEN ON THE VERGE OF A HIS-PANIC BREAKDOWN: Live Streamed

Directed by Matthew Byron Cassi & Abe Ramirez

Stage Manager: Devlyn Habib

Performed by Ivan Ortega, Fernando Vieira, and Jai Gonzalez Quintero

Written by Guillermo Reyes, this series of comedic monologues, which the New York Times called "Glorious," chronicles the lives of various Latino immigrants dealing with transcultural shock of race and gender identity known as the "Hispanic breakdown." The play is bracketed by the misadventures of the naive Frederico or "The Gay Little Immigrant That Could" who arrives in Los Angeles during the first day of the 1992 riots and believes he's witnessing the filming of another Lethal Weapon sequel.

Other characters include Vinnie, a kept boy being asked to leave the home of his wealthy sugar daddy because he's turned 30; Paco, a Cuban restauranteur who was imprisoned by the Communists in Cuba for being gay and has now been exiled by his right-wing Miami family for the same reason; the Teacher, a stuffy, sexually repressed English-language instructor who abuses his Latino students when they can't learn properly the "language of Princess Di"; and La Gitana, a drag Flamenco dancer struggling with AIDS as he stages his final performance.

The play ends with Federico's final misadventure as he tells of his newly found romance, a better job and his acquisition of citizenship in a grand, positive finale. "Some of the characters seem to be hanging onto their American existence by a thread, but make no mistake, these are tough, tenacious men."

*4/29 - 5/2 will be live streamed performances.
*5/6 - 5/9 will be scheduled streamed recording of live performance.

Mark your calendars, clean your paint brushes and ready your canvases.

Teatro Audaz presents Frida Vice-Versa starring San Antonio’s Victoria Gutierrez.

In legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s unconventional art class, the first lesson becomes the final lesson; death can be life and vice-versa. Frida inspires her students to live life with passion. Her teaching unfolds as a personal story — packaged as ten “lessons.” It reveals itself with the black humor of tragedy, accidents, opposites and irony that have ruled her memorable life. In this one-woman show Frida Kahlo’s spirit prevails. Although a product of a patriarchal society, Frida finds her identity, passion and love by becoming an artist in her own right.

Show Runs Feb 26th - Mar 7th.

EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH 21st

All performances will be in STREAMED ONLINE ON DEMAND access from The Public Theater of San Antonio 's main stage.

Audience members will be able to enjoy from the comfort of home or wherever they choose!

Que Viva El Teatro!!!

In this production we are celebrating the life of the Legendary Artist Frida Kahlo.
This Latinx Artist helped pave the way not only for more Latinx Artists, but was a catalyst for Women Artists.

Teatro Audaz would like to honor a Local Artist and a member of our own Audaz familia that we feel shares the same passion, perseverance and drive as Frida Kahlo.

Maria Ibarra, is a local Latinx Artist and Educator for the San Antonio Community. She has graced many San Antonio Stages with her talent and love and has helped support local Theaters with her leadership.

Teatro Audaz would like to honor Ms. Ibarra by donating 20% of all profits from ticket sales for the entire run of the show to help support her in her current personal fight against cancer.

Please be sure to purchase your ticket now and spread the word for others to purchase as every ticket sold will help further this fight.

Teatro Audaz is proud to present the award winning production of (Un)Documents by Jesús I. Valles. Directed by Rudy Ramirez.

Starring Jesús I. Valles

With a single phrase, you can give up your country. With a single signature, you can tear a family apart. With a single word, you can learn to transform. In their first full-length solo show, (Un)Documents, award-winning actor and poet Jesús I. Valles journeys across both sides of a river with two names, moving between languages to find their place as a child, a lover, a teacher, and a sibling in a nation that demands sacrifice at the altar of citizenship. In doing so, they create a new kind of documentation written with anger, fierce love, and the knowledge that what makes us human can never be captured on a government questionnaire.

(Un)Documents is a multiple B. Iden Payne Award winner for Outstanding Actor in a Drama (Jesus I. Valles), Outstanding Director of a Drama (Rudy Ramirez), and Outstanding Original Script. It is also an Austin Critics Table Award recipient for Excellence in Direction (Rudy Ramirez) and it was named one of Robert Faires’s Top10 Theatrical Treasurers of 2018 in the Austin Chronicle.

Stage Manager: Dorianna James
ASM: Diego Habib-Campbell
